Oh.
Thanks for the elucidation, sir...
Now I won't be hankering after that lens. <g>

What the wikipedia listing doesn't provide is a picture of the EF24-70/2.8L lens fitted with lens hood and mounted on a body... The lens hood is *huge* and makes the assembled kit enormous, almost as big as the 300/4L IS with the hood collapsed. It presents a serious challenge to fit in any bag with the hood fitted in a "ready to use" manner.

True, but the hood is unique and one of the major strong suits of the lens. The 24-70 gets longer as it gets wider, and the hood is fixed to the non-extending portion of the lens, and thus the portion of the hood that's beyond the front element gets shorter as the lens zooms wider. So it's fairly unique in that the hood actually provides good protection throughout the zoom range, rather than just at the wide end (As other zoom hoods tend to). That said, my old Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di SP was about the same size at max zoom extension (75mm) as the 24-70L is at minimum zoom extension (70mm) and about 1/3 the weight. The f2.8 L lenses are beasts, due to build and the internal AF motors.
