I think you need more depth of field in both of these. As someone pointed out, 
almost nothing in the fence post picture is actually in focus. To get a 
reasonable amount of depth of field with a macro, you have to shoot with a 
small stop. You probably need at least f16 with both of these shots in order to 
get a reasonable amount of the subjects in focus. That makes a tripod necessary.
