I converted an MX screen for my use on my DS - no problems with thickness.

With the encouragement of this thread, I went by the local camera shop today. He's got lots of old junk cameras, so I bought the split-prism screen out of an old dead Minolta for $5. After about 1/2 hour of sanding on it, I got it from the original size of

1.405"x920"x0.050"

to that of the -DS's stock screen of

0.985"x690"x0.050"

Preliminary testing seems to imply accurate focusing (both manual and auto), and negligible impact on metering. I'm pumped! I can now immediately zero in on correct focus with all my old MF glass. I'm also able to read the split prism down to f/8-f/11 by careful eye placement.

One thing to note... on these smaller sizes, the split prism is a larger *fraction* of the viewfinder. Doesn't bother me, but it does take up 1/4-1/3 of the vertical distance.

Now... if only I could find one with a *diagonal* split, rather than the horizontal, I'd be cooking.

Thanks for the idea.
