Why I asked is that with the tab it's impossible to mount it up-side down and
what you experienced could be caused by the screen being put in the wrong way.
The only other thing I could suggest is that it's still slightly oversized and
isn't seating fully? Otherwise it's simply a different thickness than the
original screen which would obviously misalign the actual focal plane with the
apparent focal plane through the finder.
I'd marked the tab before cutting, to avoid that ... It isn't oversized
any more, it's undersized. You're right in that it doesn't fit properly,
which I suspect of being the problem.
