Yes, and different browsers are more or less forgiving. It's a good idea to run the code through W3C's HTML validation service, or a similar service.
For those who are not familiar with the service: http://validator.w3.org/ or do a Google search on HTML validation/validator to find other such services. There are several good editors out there as well. Rob Studdert sent me info about one that I've used for years. It's on my other machine, so I don't have the info here - I seem to recall it being called "Editeur" or something similar. By now there may be better choices out there ....
