I'v had mine behave like that a couple of times when I'd had it off the camera for a while and then reinstalled it. The solution was the same as with other "D Wierdness" issues. Take the batteries out of the D for a few minutes and then replace them. (Be sure they're a fresh set.) Hopefully that's all it is and not a connection issue either the camera or grip has had since new.
I stopped having issues of this sort entirely by switching over to non rechargable lithium batteries from NiMH, and by not putting batteries into the battery grip.
