Hi Butch,

A few months ago I used an 18~55, and was not expecting much from it. 
While it's not a particularly "great" lens, I was pleasantly surprised at
how good it was compared to the comments I'd read.  I'd certainly not call
it junk.  Granted, I only used it for a few shots - a couple of close ups
of still life shots (my lunch!) and a few medium portrait type shots.  In
all cases the lens seemed acceptable for 5x7 prints, maybe even full-frame
8x10 sized shots.  No, it's not a great lens, but for the $$ it's a good
value.
