To overwrite the boot sector: Boot up with a DOS floppy. Type
fdisk /mbr.
Then reinstall Windows.
However, I don't believe that the Windows serial number is
written to the boot track. The serial number, in my experience,
has to be in the right format, but I have sucessfully used the
number from another disk, so apparently it doesn't need to be a
particular serial number.
