Why is it when I open a scanned image saved as TIFF files in 
Photoshop the quality is much deteriorated compared to the 
original scan. That is, if I open the file in Nikon Scan 4.0 the 
image is great. In Photoshop sharpness is reduced and there are 
noise artefacts as well.

I, too, have noticed that images look quite good in Nikon Scan.

Perhaps Nikon Scan adds some noise reduction and sharpening that 
is not announced. Presumably you can work on the images in PS to 
make them look like they do in NS.
