That has been its achilles heel for years now. Supposedly the newest
beta versions have some sort of color management support built into
them, but so long as they're stuck at 8 bits/channel, the usefulness
is still rather limited...
I don't know about the beta versions of the Gimp, but your
right... 8-bits/channel has been an oversight for a long time. I have
been very successful with the latest versions of the fork of Gimp
(cinepaint). In addition to high-bit densities (including floating point,
etc), it now will do full color managed workflow, soft-proofing, and icc
profile examination integration with iccexamin.
Unfortunately, cinepaint is based on gimp 1.x so it's kinda ugly.
Not sure how much of it works under non-linux.
