That's good to know, thanks Godfrey. It's one of those lenses I'll
be keeping
when I finally take the plunge to DSLR, along with the 50mm f/1.4 &
35mm f/2

You would like it, I can't imagine anyone wouldn't. It lets you use
the AF for fast focusing but allows you to "touch up" the focus
yourself for critical situations. It's one of my favorite features of
the Canon EOS lenses with USM mount ... they call it "full time
manual focus". No need to click the AF/MF switch in one shot AF mode
at all. It is by far and away the feature I missed the most when I
contemplate my switch from Canon to Pentax.
