With some (big D) Democrats it depends on when you do the measuring. But, yes, it's quite possible to be significantly to the left of the democratic party platform, just as it's possible to be to the right of the republican party platform - just take a look at the extremists in either party. It used to be that just about any political party in Europe (except, possibly, for the British Conservative party under Margaret Thatcher) would have been regarded as left of the American Democratic party.
