In indoor light, it does not autofocus correctly. Going from
distance to macro, or vice versa, often it simply could not find focus.
Other times it would, but would take a very long time. Sometimes it
would autofocus incorrectly, but report that it was in focus. For
example, trying to get macro autofocus on some text a few cm. away, it
would sometimes focus at about 3 m, then the focus confirmation signal
would light up.
Joe, one question. Do you have th AF point sent to center or are you
letting the camera pick the AF point? On a recent ski trip the AF
selection point dial got moved accidentally and for several hours I
thought my *ist D was crapping out. I changed lenses and had the same
thing happen. Anyway the symptoms were as you describe and putting the
AF selection point on center fixed it.
As you know though, AF on macro is touchy to begin with.

Tom, I always have the AF point set to center -- but sometimes it gets
moved accidentally or in the gear bag. But I just checked the camera,
and it is still set to center.
