Thanks to all who commented.  This was shot in the late afternoon with
the sun at an angle.  It was hitting the blossoms without lighting the
stems.  Since the blossoms are white and yellow, they are quite a bit
brighter than the stems and background.  So I metered for the blossoms
and the background naturally darkened down the way it was presented.
