Here's a technique to try (in photoshop) in lieu of precise selection:
- Roughly lasso the mule.
- Use "Selection->Feather..." and put in something like 20-50 pixels
if you're working from the high rez scan/original digital file (less
if you're working with the JPEG web-rez image).
- Make a layer copy ... you'll have just the area lassooed in the layer
- Sharpen it to taste.
- Add a layer mask with "Show All"
- With decreasing radius, soft-edged brushes, paint in black on the
mask to hide all sharpened areas you don't want to show
The resulting layer can also be adjusted in transparency to modify
the effectiveness of the sharpening. The feathering helps blend it
seamlessly in to the background image.
- When done, either keep the layer seperate or merge it with the
background layer.
I only rarely do precise selections. The above procedure is much
quicker and easier to achieve, even with a graphics tablet.
