Hi Derby I Guess I try to get the musician as he' s playing, again trying to guess when he's at the top of his movement.
I've used Leica with a 135mm f2.8 lens for most of my shooting, so I rarely get a group photo with this lens. I have a Pentax FA 100mm macro which I've used, I think once with the Ds. It's a great lens, but again at the equivalent of 150mm gets me a little too close. (I don't think I've ever used it with my film Pentax) Most recently i bought a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 so that I could get some group shots, but I've had considerable trouble focusing it with the Ds - I almost exclusively use manual focus - so I switched to my trusty A 35-70mm and 70-210mm lenses. Many years ago I use to shoot theatre and stage spectacles at concerts using Tri-X or 400 ISO colour neg, and had little problems. My first local club shoots here I used the same settings to shoot a couple of concerts using Tri-X but wisely also shot a colour neg film which I had processed the next day. I was out about 4 stops!!!! Fortunately I managed to save some of the film. Club owners just don't believe in lights here !! herb
