The feature I really want to see retained is a battery grip,
with a slide-out battery tray to hold the batteries.

On my recent cycle-race expedition I neglected to charge up
the batteries in the camera & grip (which I later realised had
been in the camera for around a month), although I had taken
care of the spare sets in the camera bag.

Towards the end of the second day of shooting - just as the
big-name cyclists were beginning to arrive at the finish of
the time trial - the battery indicator switched to half-charge.
I try and change batteries after that if I'm shooting anything
important, so as soon as the next cyclist had gone by I turned
off the camera, and changed out the batteries in the grip.
This took almost no time at all - just pop open the cover,
slide out the tray of old batteries, and slide in a new tray
pre-loaded with fresh batteries. Then I went to turn the
camera back on, and had a nasty moment when I saw that it
was still on (and in fact was still writing to the CF card).
I hadn't waited long enough after the last sequence of shots.
Fortunately I keep batteries in the camera, as well as a set
in the grip, so even with no batteries in the grip there was
still power for the camera to complete writing to the CF card.
But I must admit I had a nasty moment when I thought I might
have just corrupted the CF card containing that day's images.
