FAT (short for FAT16) and FAT32 refer to the directory structure used in nearly all flash media storage cards. FAT is an acronym that means "File Allocation Table". The FAT16 specification allows for up to 2 gigabyte volumes, FAT32 can theoretically allows for 2 terabyte volumes.

The DS body, with rev 1.0 firmware, supported FAT16. Firmware rev 1.02 or 1.03 (can't remember at this point) solved some issues with FAT16 formatted cards larger than 1 gigabyte and implemented FAT32 compatibility. I believe this is the same code now used with firmware rev 2.

All you need to know is that the DS with firmware rev 2 supports all currently existing SD card sizes. I don't know why the D was even mentioned since you asked about the DS.
