I think that's true of basically anywhere. I'm trying to remember if my longest trip around the South Island was 2 weeks or 3, but either way I only covered the lower half, and not really that much of it. This country is not very big but there's certainly enough to keep someone occupied for quite a while.
I couldn't even tell you where my favourite place is. There's only one part of the South Island I've yet to visit: the area around Golden Bay and Abel Tasman National Park.
I wouldn't be much help with the North Island though. I've spent some time in Wellington but that's about it... I love that city but it's a pity they built it right on top of the country's biggest fault line.
