There's GIMP - Gnu Image Manipulation Program on Linux that works with
layers, has numerous filters and tools to bild own or use already
created scripts that for instance can sharpen image without bringinig
noise. See www.gimp.org
And this is open-source (freeware), meaning you won't need to spend a
dime on updates. There's 2 panorama tools also - "Hugin panorama
creator" and "GIMP panorama plugin" that does the job.
