I suggest getting the kit. The lens is quite good enough for many things.
It is small, light and fits the camera nicely. Not my best, fastest,
widest or longest lens but it spends more time on my DS than any other of
my lenses.
If you don't end up using the lens you can usually make money selling it on
eBay.

That is what I thought (although I still don't get why a fast wide is
more expensive that a fast normal and yet variable aperture zooms are
always faster at the wide end) and hoped but I just wanted to make sure.
As for getting one, it's not my call/credit card, but I'm hoping for it. :)
