Will my FTZ500 work with my *ist DS, meaning full TTL and major functions? Would it be wiser to buy a new flash as well?

People have complained about the repeatability of TTL on the -Digis (Bill Robb may still have his page up with the model), while others question Pentax TTL as a whole (ie on film as well). Some people swear by the new Sigma flash on the -D; that supports P-TTL, has a long guide number, HSS etc. Pentax will be releasing the 540 soon, I believe, you may want to hold out.

AFAIK, the TTL flash is so much erratic with the D, not with the DS/DL/etc. I had the chance to use the DS for some time and it worked fine with older flash units, while my D doesn't. I think at a certain time (after the D and before the DS) Pentax was able to fix the mess. I don't know if the 2nd generation flash circuitry for the D addresses the problem.

P.S. and no, I am not in Brazil. Though I am Brazilian, currently I live in Lithuania.

Ah, you may want to try Germany to source your -Ds then. You may also want to consider the Samsung counterpart; it's most probably exactly the same camera with a different badge on it, but don't take my word for it.

From the hardware point of view, I trust they are the same. However, I
wouldn't be surprised to discover that the Samsung GX-1S/L duo won't have backward compatibility with M-series lenses, or will show other menu variations. If so, it will be interesting to see if they will accept Pentax firmware. We have to wait and see. I'd advice anybody planning to get a Sam to check the menus before buying in a rush.
