Exposure is difficult.
Never trust the meter.
It will try to give you a 18% grey (in average) picture.That's how meters
work!

A meter is not a miraculous garantie for well exposed photographs everytime.
On the contrary, in fact.
When you are photographing small, bright objects (not filling the frame) -
like faces on a theater scene or the moon - you MUST "underexpose" (minus
correction). Two stops is a very good starting point in my experience.
Or perhaps spot metering, which will give you an 18% "grey" moon.

A good starting point for moon pix is the "moony 11" - similar to the
sunny16 rule.  Aperture f:11, shutter 1/ISO.
