They're useful if you find yourself in a situation where you're scraping
your fingers between your monopod and lens and don't want to have your arm
up and over -- I doubt I'd ever use one for hand-held, for instance.
I fell in love with the vertical release the first time I shot portraits
using the istD and the attached grip.
I never have the thing on the camera out of the studio though.
