Judging from the bird photographs @ treknature.com, a lot of birdphotographs
are done with 70-200mm, 100-300, 170-500mm zooms. A few are done using
longer focal lengths - like 400mm or 600mm ( ).
I guess some of them are done in Zoo's, but most are wild life photographs.
IMO the best ones are done at 200mm or more.

400mm:

600mm;

I guess the best preparation is to know a lot about the specific birds and
the environment ;-)
And knowing your equipment.
And being prepared to use enough time ;-)
The local ornithology communities should provide good guidelines as to where
to find which birds.

I'd like to give it a try too. I live a few km's away from a Natura 2000
habitat:

Hi Tim
I'm very interested in your results because I would like to get some bird
shots too and do not have the proper equipment too ;-)
You first sample does not look not very promising. I really wonder if I
should start doing birds with similar tools with film if you do not get
better results digitally :-(

greetings
Markus

I really need some feedback on this to get me going. This image is not meant
as documentation on the specie, more a getting the "mood" picture.
