I doubt if they leave mechanical linkage. Nikon didn't having quite good compatibility across their system. New lenses would be usable on old bodies, you would just loose AF. And there will be a few people who would have both - new D and old D to use together with new USM lenses. All people looking for lenses for older D bodies would have a good choice of second hand lenses as well as a range of DA lenses with mechanical, classic AF. Yes, it would be nice if they'd leave mechanical AF linkage for compatibility reason, but that would mean bulkier, more expensive, more complicated and thus more fail prone lenses...
