Down here the insurers will only pay for the damaged/written-off vehicles. Any personal injury gets sorted out by ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation: a govt department second only to Inland Revenue for its bad reputation), in conjunction with the public health system and some private health providers. ACC was formed specifically to prevent people from suing each other over injuries.
