Subject: Lense types in EXIF

I wonder how Pentax determines attached lense type. I can read

Lens Type : smc PENTAX-FA J 75-300mm F4.5-5.8 AL

in EXIF for example which is correct. Does it only apply for Pentax SMC lenses or other, Sigma lense has coding recognized by the camera?

The camera manufacturer is only responsible for proper reading of it's own lenses. Lenses made after the camera is released may only be supported if future firmware updates to the camera allow it to recognize what the lens is sending it. Third party manufacturers (SIG-nificant MA-lfunction as an example) are responsible for ensuring their lenses are completely compatable with the cameras they are selling mounts for. Since the lens is not made by the first party, it's less likely, though still possible, that the camera can read the lens information, if present. I only have one third party lens, and elderly Tokina zoom, so I really don't have a flying fart of a clue about whether they are supported. Nor do I care, I bought Pentax for the lenses they make, not so that I could buy someone else's stuff.
