IMO the photographer on the sidelines looking through the viewfinder,
framing the shot & picking the right moment to fire the shutter shows
a greater level of skill and creativity than the technician in the
stands pressing a button.

In some sports, basketball being one, it is known that the best pictures will generally happen in two distinct areas of the court. For the photographer on the sidelines, this means finding a good vantage point where the net can be seen, and waiting for something to happen. Does it really elevate the image to something more than a picture if the photographer is standing beside the camera or not?
