I haven't used a balance bar as Bill suggests. Even with ballheads though
it's going to be a tug of war between friction and gravity.

Subject: Keeping a lens level
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006 13:27:20 -0800
I have a fairly good tripod (a Slik butI can't remember the model number)
which has a pan-tilt head.
The problem is that it's difficult to keep long lenses level. The longest
I have a 80-320 zoom and the front end of the lens sags when mounted
on the tripod and left along.
Is there some decent solution e.g. would it help to use a ballhead?
I don't want to spend several hundred dollars either.
Suggestions will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Gautam
