I've got a vague memory of it being a normal magneto system with a wiper to 
distribute the EHT to each cylinder, although, if the mag spins with the 
crankcase, that would be uneccessary.  Try reading this:

They channeled the intake mixture through a hollow crankshaft!

Rotaries had a lot going for them in those days, not least of which was smoothness, although I have found a reference to a single cylinder rotary, which must have been an interesting thing to sit behind/in front of. If I find a picture, I'll be sure to let you know...
