As a 16 or 17 year old kid, I was diving off Santa Cruz Island
(southern California), and got ahead of my dive partner. I
drifted down to the bottom to wait for her to catch up. Not
watching what I was doing, I knelt directly on the nose of a
nurse shark that had been waiting on the bottom. The shark took
off immediately and I took a tumble. When I got upright, the
shark was off a ways swimming back and forth and looking as
confused as I was. I figure I had eight lives left after that one.
