From what I remember, this is incorrect.  They were headed across the 
country, to the west coast, no?


That is correct, and the smaller aircraft (757's) don't have 
intercontinental range. But they were still almost fully laden with 
fuel. And the smallest of them simply dwarfs a B-25.
