Because he can.

I can understand this desire - in a very small way I did something
like this 20 years ago, building digital models which were then
rendered with our raytracer, creating texture maps for the surfaces,
etc., etc.  There are lots of other examples to be found in various
SIGGraph technical slide sets - the models get better (and larger)
year by year, as tools become better, and processor speeds increase.
