Jens,
Two weeks ago, I had the *istD in -10°C plus windchill for the whole
day, two days in a row without malfunction. On the same set of
batteries. Well- provided that I didn't try to AF with the DA
16-45...:-)
I had Lithiums this time, but I've had good performance with some
NiMHs as well. Notably, both my sets of 2100 mAh "GP" batteries
outperform both a 2350 mAh Hähnel set and a 2400 mAh Panasonic set.
A set of regular AA Lithiums are probably the best way to go in the
cold, though.

I didn't say the D was useless. It's a great camera. Just not the
action
photogrpahers first choise (some guy asked about a camera for
photographing
skating). An action photographer would probably choose a camera with
very
fast FPS, AF, and write speeed, I (still) believe.
Yes football is great fun. And difficult. During this game three
goals were
scored - I didn't get one of them, as I was changing batteries all
the time.
Which battery will last a full half-game (45 minutes) in cold (4
degrees
Celsius) and windy conditions? I would like to know before the next
game,
please? What do hockey game or ice skating, winter olympics
photographers
do?

You are full of surprises Jens ;-)
I wonder how many posts you have sent the list telling us that the D
is
useless for action photos? And now, what do you do?
You post an action shot ;-D
You are a strange character. Coming from me, that is a compliment. I
like
strange characters.
Anyone taking bets on when Jens will post a pictures using P TTL
flash? My
bet is ten dollars on within 6 months ;-)
Nice shot BTW, Jens. Shooting football is hard.
It is hard to predict the next move in the game. At least when the
game is
bad, in a good game you will find a rhythm.
Note to myself: I need a set of fresh batteries.

I did my first action shots. The *ist D/FA 80-200mm behaved quit
well
(using
AF).
My shots were heavily overexposed (my fault) but not too bad
otherwise. I
was positively surprised. Except my batteries kept dying on my ;-/
I don't have a battery grip - and the recharables were too weak.
Would it help to use a battery grip - or is it the same problem
with
rather
cold batteries (it's 4-6 degrees Celsius here)?

Yes, but it's the camera's contrast control mode.
