Trackpads hate me and I return the feeling. I get greasy fingertips
(genetic predisposition to sweat in anything resembling warmth) and
trackpads hate that as it confuses the sensors. I also find them quite
inaccurate even when I've got dry fingertips. And I'm always dragging
the heel of a hand over them when typing. The only nice thing about them
is tap-to-double-click functions.
Been using nipple-mice since the original Thinkpad 700C, and they work.

Posting from a Thinkpad T41 with the trackpad disabled and nipple-mouse
enabled.

One of my clients has a Thinkpad and I've occasionally been called to
do something with it. I find the red pointer thingus, whatever they
call it, to be incredibly irritating to use. It is nearly impossible
for me to do something with it that doesn't need to be redone a couple
of times to get it right.
I'm far far faster when I can use the track pad ... I only attach a
mouse or graphics tablet to my laptop when I am doing image processing,
and I do a lot of report writing and such on the laptops. I usually
navigate with the trackpad without even moving my hands from the keys,
using my thumbs. Of course, I also know my word processing software
very well and rarely need to use a trackpad or mouse when typing anyway
... I just configure the keyboard to have all my favorite shortcuts
embedded in keystrokes.

As someone who uses Thinkpads daily, the nipple is better than a
trackpad, but significantly inferior to a mouse. The mouse is simply
more accurate and faster.
Both my Thinkpads have USB mice attached.
My Mac has a 4 button mouse. Right-clicking is faster than ctrl-
clicking.

I still think the little red eraser in the middle of Thinkpad
keyboards is the quickest and easiest pointer device to use in
conjuction with the keyboard, no need to move your hand back and
forth between them.
