I have the Sigma 70-200/2.8 APO EX (not DG) and it works great on film and digital. It is not only bright when you look through the viewfinder and easy to manually focus, its smallest aperture is F32, which I love for landscape shots. I have not used the 50-500, but if you send it to me yours, I can try it out and give you a much more detailed comparison.
