On many laptops it is easy to remove the hard
drive--it's under a cover (often with a latch), and
one just removes the cover and pulls out the drive. 
Try removing and reinserting it a few times.  This has
fixed the "operating system not available" problem a
few times on a Toshiba and an HP laptop.
