I'd have a go at just working with what you've got. If your lenses are too short or you can't get close enough, try turning your disadvantage around and include some of the surrounding environment.

Or crop like a madman and say that the resultant grain/noise gives it personality... I did that once with a picture of some relatively distant swans on a misty lake. Shot with 400 film, printed at 15x10" then cropped to 10x4"... plenty of "personality" :)
