Do you mean a lens with a maximum aperture of 3.5 or 2.8? I dont think it matters what the aperture is "set" at, since it focuses wide open, except for screw mounts.

Yes. Although if you have an f/1.4 lens set to f/4 for the exposure, the focus indication will be within an acceptably sharp range in most cases. It just won't be critically sharp.
