The caipirinha became popular and kind of trendy in New York City about
1994 or so. The trendiness lasted until we all figured out that there
were better things to drink than something that tasted like sweetened
kerosene. The trend disappeared fairly quickly and I haven't seen that
stuff here in many years.
But last year I went to the Dominican Republic for a vacation and they
were serving them at the bar at the resort I stayed at. Tried one again,
hoping they had improved the quality of the kerosene. No such luck, so I
went back to drinking something else.
