Hmmm, by that definition American football and hockey are both sports :-). Seriously, I've shot a lot of motorsports (although no motorcycles) and quite a bit of American football. I find both quite fun to shoot. A lot of my motorsports shootign was with a 200 mm lens. Same for football. Although I've shot motorsports with lenses as long as 800mm. The compressed perspective can be interesting. I always shoot sports in manual mode. Same is true for nature photography. I want to control both the stop and the shutter. It's not hard to keep an eye on the exposure.
