I find that with the shadow/highlight tool set to advanced, it offers a
great deal of control. Not only can the amount of adjustment be
changed, but the threshold of adjustment as well. It's basically
another way of using curves, with the added advantage of a saturation
adjustment and a mid-tone contrast adjustment built in. In other words,
it weaves a complex combination of curve adjustments. I've gotten
quite comfortable with it.
