I've had some good sucess recently shooting portraits in open shade with an AF 400T firing into a soft shoulder umbrella. The camera is an LX loaded with Portra 160NC, rated at 100 ASA. The strobe/umbrella is the main light, and the north light from open sky makes a very nice fill. I've also used this same setup with hard backlight from an out-of-frame sun. My main problem has been the REALLY SLOW recycle time of the AF400T with six AA batteries powering it. The wait just ruins the mood of a shoot. Just when the model is warming up to the task you have to tell her to wait while the flash is recycling. Yesterday, I landed a Quantum Battery 2 on ebay. The day prior I obtained the AF400T cord for the same on ebay. I'm hoping to try it out in the next week or two. I'm looking forward to seeing what it can do. I paid quite a bit for the battery -- 168.50 -- probably more than it's worth. But it's supposed to be like new, and it comes with the charger. Does anyone know what this battery sold for new?
