I remember the old Buick pushrod that went into the old Rovers. I thought there was a newer Ford engine that went into the newer Rovers, maybe not.
I'm not sure of the parentage of the current 4.5L V8 in the LR3, Discos and Range Rover lines.
The Freelander in the US currently has a 2.5L V6 developed while BMW owned Land Rover, before they sold it to Ford. There are other engine options in the UK not available here (originally a 1.8L gas engine, same as the MG-F; now a 2L gas four and a 2.2L twin-turbo diesel, I think). The next generation Freelander (aka LR2) is rumored to have one option be the Volvo 2.5L V6 (Ford owned but Volvo developed).
The current 2.5L V6 feels like a BMW 325i straight six ... a bit gutless in the midrange but free revving and nice power over 3500rpm.
