Embed the profile if I feel like it. It won't hurt the vast majority
of folks and it might help a few. But if I don't embed the profile,
practically no one will notice.
Well, if you looked at the screen images I posted to Rob yesterday,
with a profile the sRGB image looked identical to the Adobe 1998 RGB
image in Safari. the unprofiled sRGB image didn't quite look as good
(although it was close). I don't care about everyone else's monitors,
I see the difference and I prefer to have the better quality rendering.
I agree with you on the practical side ... due to the lack of good
monitor profiling and software rendering consistency today, it really
matters only to those who are critical and who keep their systems
calibrated.
But, the few K of extra data per image really makes very little
difference in storage and download time, given todays network
bandwidth, so it's worthwhile to embed the ICC profile information to
promote a better future when rendering might be better handled and
future monitors self-calibrating to sensible standards.
