Actually I use the classic look set up with a neutral gray background,
however recently with one of the MS upgrades the shutdown menu went back
from the radio buttons which I like to the old style drop down menu
which is a pain. And CTL-ALT-DEL now gives me a Windows Security Menu
instead of just the Task Manager. Drop down menus you don't want makes
for two three extra clicks and mouse movement which annoy the heck out
of me. Switching to the XP theme does not get rid of the drop down menus
either.
As soon as I upgrade the laptop's hard drive I will put the old one in a
USB case, and use it to back up my critical data. Then I am going to do
a security erase, fdisk, format, and reload XP Pro from the CD. Then I
will have to reload umpteen dozen programs, set everything back to my
customized efficient setup, disable Windows Updates completely if I can
figure out how I did that in the past, and finally reload my data <SIGH!>.
(That answer your question, Dave?)
Or maybe it is time to turn the desktop into a Linux Fileserver and use
the laptop for everyday stuff. That would probably be easier, and Big
Brother Gates could not mess with my desktop.
Winter before last I was planning on building up a new system, but the
truck decided that I needed to spend the money on it instead. (Wonder
why I only manage to have a bit of extra money in the winters?) This
thing is getting so old (A 900mhz AMD I build in 2000-2001) that I
really ought to try and replace it somehow.

Interesting. Last night I rolled back all the XP Pro automatic updates
back to mid December. Now my computer seems to run faster and my
Internet connection is measurably faster (3x by the tests on
broadband.com), and I am getting more PDML posts too. However I still
have the new menus. "Reinstall from scratch" is now on my To-Do list.
