When we survey in the north in winter (Ontario)the data
collectors often freeze up.We made a styrofoam half
box and cut out a spot for a 'chemical heater'(lit charcol
inside a tin box, sold at any Canadian Tire store)and this
kept the intsrument warmer.May not have any practical
photography use,just thought i'd share.

I think you're right Doug.
Inside there's a chemical mixture that reacts when exposed to air or
moisture. To keep camera gear warm, be sure to get the "exposed to
air"
variant.

Though i guess all chemical reactions like that will go pretty slow
at deep
freezer temperatures.
