There is one worry about not getting the updates from Microsoft, in that any security holes are not plugged until you do the update manually, and nor will any other bug-fixes have been installed. I let my systems get the updates automatically, having set them to check for updates at midnight each day, and if I get an update alert from Microsoft during the day I can normally stop for long enough to let it go through. Since I distribute custom software from my PC's to my clients, I'm paranoid about having everything up-to-date, security updates particularly, as well as having my AV software on auto-update as well. Can't afford to be trojaning my clients!

YMMV, of course

In a message dated 5/2/2006 6:15:26 PM Pacific Daylight Time, Goto Start, then Run. Type in msconfig. Usually, the first time I do this, instead I do a search of my system and find where msconfig.exe is and put it as a short cut on my menu. I like having it where I can get it and then I don't have to remember the file name. On my system, it is in PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES\msconfig.exe (for shortcut).

Then when it comes up, Goto Start up. The one you want to disable is (frankly, I don't remember but it should be obvious by name and directory. I also disable my HP updates this way too. I find automatic updates annoying.) Uncheck the checkbox next to it and restart your computer. It will say after startup that you are starting up with a custom configuration. Check the box that says don't show this message again.

That's it.
