Same thing happened to my 820, Ann. That was last year and I replaced it with a R200 for $49 with rebate.

One thing to think about, Ann, is that if you are going to change back and forth between the color and B&W ink sets is that it requires wasting a lot of ink on cleaning cycles. It would probably be cheaper to just buy a second printer for the B&W, especially since you can use the ink comes with in the the color printer so the actual cost is only pocket change. The ink cart that came with my R200 were not starter cartridges but full ones, so it the printer with cartridges was actually cheaper than buying just the cartridges off of ebay.

Ann, I recently got the R220 mainly for use as a text printer but I also
wanted to be able to print color photos. If you're not going to do any color
prints with it, what I'm about to relate might not interest you.

I paid $99 USD for the printer @ Comp USA - it comes with 6 ink cartridges.
If you go out and but the cartridges separately you'll pay around 70 to 80
USD - so it might make sense to buy a spare printer!

BTW - I haven't done any B+W printing with it but it does great color
prints.
Mainly printing on glossy photo paper for 4"X6".

Ken, that is what I paid --
It came with a starter set of ink that allowed me to print
quite a lot. I am planning on
doing color printing- though mainly for transfer sheets to
print on fabric now and then
and for my business cards and to make my calendar prototype.

I would like to make some serious bw prints on it if
possible though.

at least with the 6 separate cartridges the color ones one
at a time works. If I buy the
ink cartridges one at a time I can get $3.00 off on each at
my local Staples with their
recycling plan.
My 820 totally crapped out on me and I was mid project when
it died.

Subject: OT: new printer - Epson r220 -questions

now I have 6 ink cartridges -

I'm not doing a lot of printing, but opinions about this
beast and how it
handles black and white would be appreciated before I go off
and run out of
ink experimenting.

Someone was talking a while back about getting all gray
scale cartridges -

favorite papers for this printer as opposed to older ones?

So far all I've used it for is a bit of text and making 20
transfer sheets for
a t-shirt design job I had - those came out well.

thanks
